Mr M Stanton
Chair of the Local Governing Body, Church Lawton School
Mike’s autistic son was born in 1985. He had a terrible time in mainstream education but survived to get a job and live independently. This experience led Mike to help set up the Furness Branch of the NAS in 1997. He joined the NAS Council in 2002 and served until 2015 when he joined the NAS Board of Trustees.
Mike was a late developer who worked in an office, a bookshop and as a docker before going to teacher training college as a mature student. He then taught full time in a local authority school for children with special educational needs from 1983 until retirement in 2015. Many of his pupils were autistic. Mike combined his personal and professional experience to write about autism and has lectured on autism to professional audiences.
Mike lives in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria and enjoys gardening, bird watching and walking in the Lake District.
Mike is an appointed co-opted member of the Local Governing Board.
