Grand opening of our new Sensory Field
Published on 27 November 2019
Our new sensory school field features an outside classroom with a wooden gazebo, so that students can use the area for quiet reading and relaxation, come rain or come shine.
The field is encircled by a sensory path, leading students across different terrains and textures, to sensory musical instruments and through a scented garden. There is also an area encouraging wildlife, with wildflowers and fruit trees with the aim of pupils gathering home-grown foods to use in cookery lessons and a life skills unit, housed within a log cabin.
Sports facilities include an all-weather multi-use games area and a storage unit for PE equipment, bikes and scooters.
Church Lawton’s Business Manager, Sarah Burton, and Site Manager Charles Lowndes worked for almost two years on the project, working closely with our charity’s fundraising team to fundraise over £200,000 to bring the sensory field to life.
"The sport and sensory field will give students a calm space to engage in sensory play as well as the opportunity to participate in physical education lessons, which will help social skills and selfesteem. There are so many benefits to this and we can’t wait to see our students thrive outside the classroom. We’re immensely proud of our students and what we’ve achieved as a school so far. We have high expectations for each of them and hope that our new sports field and garden will help them to achieve even more."
