A passionate and driven leader, Amanda Makoka is delighted at the opportunity to lead Thames Valley School and work with the pupils and their families to enable all to succeed. Beginning her career in the Czech Republic teaching English to primary and secondary children, Amanda soon realised where her passion lies, to empower children to become the best they can be and follow their dreams.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Drama at The University of Northumbria, Amanda then graduated from the University of London at Goldsmiths College in 2006 with a Drama PGCE. Following this, Amanda taught up to A’level English and Drama in schools in London before taking the position of senior teacher in charge of teaching, learning and assessment at Annie Lawson School in Berkshire, a school for pupils with special educational needs.

Amanda proceeded to hone her knowledge of special education and personal leadership skills during ten years at Mabel Prichard School, Oxford. A school for pupils with severe and complex needs, moving from the Assistant Head to Deputy Head and responsible for the daily operation of the secondary site. During this time, Amanda also graduated with a Master of Arts in Education, Leadership and Management at Oxford Brookes University in 2015.

Amanda has extensive experience in teaching and learning for pupils with Autism and SEND, combined with a vast knowledge and background of leading teams and working with multi-agencies to support children to fulfil their potential.

Amanda comes to Thames Valley School with the vision to collaboratively lead a school that is rooted in the community with the child and their family at the core. Through utilising the skills of highly trained staff and by creating a safe environment with an engaging and inspiring curriculum, Amanda aims to equip the pupils at Thames Valley School with the skills, understanding and knowledge to succeed and transition into further education and employment. Amanda believes each learner at Thames Valley School has a place in society to follow their life ambitions, by developing their personal skills and knowledge. Whilst supporting the community with their understanding and awareness, collectively we can support our learners at Thames Valley School to reach their goals and become valued members of their own community.
