Thurnscoe House and Studios
Testimonials
It is fantastic, he is severely autistic and aggressive, he cooks, learns other life skills and I couldn’t wish for a better place. Staff are helping us at home with his self-care, I feel listened to and there is good communication.
The residential provision gives vulnerable pupils who have complex needs a nurturing and safe environment to live in. The high standard of care is an important part of their lives, whether pupils stay for short breaks or board from Monday to Friday.
I think he likes it more than home.
Thurnscoe House and Studios is the name of our boarding provision. Located on the school grounds both provisions are rated as Outstanding by Ofsted. Boarding can be weekly (Monday night to Friday morning) or flexible.
Thurnscoe House
Thurnscoe House is a six bedroom property with its own garden. The house is a two storey building and designed with a recreational lounge, a craft/homework room, a kitchen, one cloakroom, a laundry room, and a large garden. There are televisions, games consoles and iPads available for homework and leisure and all bedrooms are en-suite. One of the bedrooms is located on the lower floor. This is designed to support individuals who cannot access group living straight away.
Children have the opportunity to personalise their bedrooms or studio with paint colours, soft furnishings, photographs, pictures and personal possessions. We will endeavour to ensure each child using our flexible boarding uses the same bedroom, however as bedrooms will not solely be allocated to one individual we will make sure personal effects are protected and secure once the child leaves the service. Items will be put back in place, prior to them returning for their next stay.
Thurnscoe Studios
Thurnscoe Studios is a single storey building which has been developed to provide young people with the opportunity to develop their independence further, in preparation for future placements. This service works closely with the school's Inclusion Hubs and therefore is able to offer specialist support to young people with a PDA diagnosis or young people who respond positively to this specialist practice. The home has a central recreational lounge, central kitchen and four studio apartments. Each studio has a sleeping/living area, en-suite and a kitchenette.
Testimonials
Staff are well trained so that they are highly empathetic to the pupils’ individual needs. Pupils clearly benefit from this and are happy and safe, and enjoy normal teenage experiences. Pupils receive care from experienced staff, who are knowledgeable about ASD. The staff are skilled in providing bespoke packages of care specifically tailored to the pupils’ diverse needs. Consequently, pupils know how their day is structured and what to expect, which minimises any uncertainties and promotes their full engagement.
Parents are really positive about the progress pupils make and frequently point out that staff know their children well and are very effective in how they support them. This includes the admissions process and support when pupils move on to college. Parents commented: ‘The progress he has made in such a short time has been amazing. Having never been in an educational setting, his transition from the home environment was coordinated with him at the centre and my input as a parent was always given much respect. I felt the staff worked with us and together we all made this as easy as possible for him,’ and ‘My child is leaving at 19 years, but school is really helping with transition to a new college, liaising and organising visits.'
