Broadfield Specialist School caters for pupils with generic learning difficulties. All our pupils have a statement of special educational needs (SEN). Our age-range is from 11 to 19 and we currently have 130 pupils in school. The school is organised into 3 departments – Key Stage (KS)3, KS4 and a Further Education (FE) department. Some class groups follow a creative curriculum. Most class groups are taught by subject specialist teachers. One class group caters for higher functioning pupils with autism. Several staff have SEN and other specialist qualifications, including three specialist teachers for autism. We have coordinators for Cognition & Learning, The Profound Curriculum, Autism and Connecting Communities, along with subject specific coordinators. We currently have over 80 staff in total. Pupils in KS3 & KS4 follow the National Curriculum, just as young people in any secondary school. KS 4 choose their ‘options’ from our Pathways options at the end of year nine. Pupils in FE follow a destination led Gateways Curriculum which includes wide and varied work experience opportunities for all pupils. Pupils also have their individual learning needs addressed through creative curriculum approaches and ‘personalised learning’, all learning is highly differentiated and responsive to meet individual needs. We have a nurture group ‘Rocksteady’ and a Boxall Profile qualified teacher in school. We have a trained member of staff who carries out ‘Sensory Profiling’.
