The autism spectrum condition (ASC) base at Cathays has been open for 8 years. Having started with one pupil it now has 16 pupils spanning from years 7 to 13. Each pupil has an individual timetable which varies according to need. Integration into mainstream is open to all pupils and is well supported. Pupils are also given social skills support and opportunities to develop many independence skills such as cooking, cleaning, independent travel training and sports (offered with individual instructors). The pupils are allocated spaces through the Local Educational Authority (LEA). Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. The school uses the Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework. Other disabilities catered for by the school are specific learning difficulties (SpLD).
