City of Chelmsford Mencap is an independent charity giving support to children and adults with learning disabilities in Chelmsford and across the Mid-Essex area. Their members have a range of disabilities including autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The majority of members are socially and financially excluded from enjoying activities we all take for granted. City of Chelmsford Mencap are dedicated to giving them the opportunity to socialise, make new friends and gain independence in safe surroundings whilst being cared for by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers. They operate a number of subsidised clubs and events across Chelmsford for children and adults on a weekly basis, and daily during holidays, giving parents and carers much needed respite. They also organise social events for the whole family to enjoy including trips and holidays. City of Chelmsford Mencap provide the Outreach Academy. Here anyone with a learning disability over the age of 19 has access to lifelong learning through attending workshops on topics such as basic literacy and numeracy, health and fitness, arts and crafts and many more. Lifelong learning is available 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year. They have also launched a 'Discover Health' programme.
