First Step is a voluntary organisation working in close partnership with the London Borough of Havering (LBH). It receives partial funding from the LBH but rely heavily on the generosity of many donors and fundraisers. First Step provides facilities for pre-school children with special needs and disabilities and their families. It has its own minibus and offers family sessions, pre-school sessions, structured PACC sessions (Promoting Attention, Communication and Co-operation) (see separate entry), Music Therapy, Counselling service, Sib-Club For siblings of the children (aged 8 and over). Parents and carers have the use of a separate room for coffee breaks, meetings, discussions groups and training sessions. There is a parent committee who help to organise social and fundraising events. There is a small room for consultations and discussions with other agencies. There is a multi-sensory room and a computer for the children. A second computer is available for use by parents with Internet connection. First Steps provides information for parents on benefits and support services and help is given in gaining access to useful additional services. Advice and guidance can be offered if required.
