Oliver House School

Main information

Type of service: Day schools, Schools

We are an autism specific independent school set in Lancashire. We offer a warm, safe and cosy autism friendly environment built on the Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework for low arousal and to promote independence. Using gentle teaching techniques we work with our pupils in a calm and patient manner to build progress and achievement. The SPELL framework means your child or young person is at the centre of all we do and our inclusive curriculum is flexible to offer the intervention that is most appropriate for each pupil. We can incorporate Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren (TEACCH), Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), Intensive Interactions, sensory diets and the latest therapeutic approaches to working successfully with even complex 'challenging' children. Each pupil has an individual personalised curriculum to exactly match their needs adapted from National Curriculum entitlements together with 'Every Child Matters' agenda outcomes. Regular pupil assessments include a 'sensory profile' and detailed functional communication report by our speech and language therapist to ensure that progress is seen in all areas. We work in partnership with parents, Local Education Authorities (LEAs) and other professionals. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils with Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks and interview.
