Positive Behaviour Support Service (PBSS)

Main information

Type of service: Interventions and therapies

A service for children and adults who have a learning disability and/or Autism Spectrum Condition who are engaging in behaviours that are challenging services. The functions of the PBSS include: a range of theory and direct “on the job” training for parents, carers, school and support staff; comprehensive functional assessments and tailored intervention plans for individuals; continual monitoring and evaluation; early intervention and crisis prevention for individuals susceptible to engaging in behaviour that challenges. Placement review and development is also a key function of the service. This reflects the commitment of the PBSS to ensure service users are residing in the least restrictive living arrangements and in their local area. All training and intervention by the PBSS is grounded in a scientific approach to behaviour change called Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). The Behaviour Analyst Certification Board® (BACB) is the international body which certificates Behaviour Analysts (BCBA) and Assistant Behaviour Analysts (BCaBA). The PBSS will be led and staffed by BCBA and BCABAs. The PBSS endeavours to skill up mainstream service staff in the use of effective methods to understand and improve the behaviour and quality of life of service users.
