St Christopher's is a fully integrated school for children with a range of learning difficulties, from moderate to complex, and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from the ages of 5-16 years. There are 170 pupils on roll, 58 funded places for children with ASD, who work in the main body of the school. There are an additional 10 places in the Assessment Unit for pre-school children. The school's ASD Outreach service for children with ASD supports 60 schools locally and oversees and advises on the support of 300 children. The school building is light, modern and well equipped and has a number of quiet working areas for small groups. There are specialised rooms for design technology (materials and food), art and science. The school maintains good working links with mainstream schools in the local area and has access to the Further Education (FE) College courses for students in Year 11. Teachers and staff are trained in a wide range of interventions and make full use of Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL), Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren (TEACCH), Makaton and Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) where appropriate. All children have full access to the National Curriculum with additional therapies when needed. Another intervention, approach and programme offered by the school is FRIENDS, a programme to help children cope with anxiety (10 weeks of 1 hour sessions each).
