The Castle School
Main information
The Castle School is a specialist college for Communication and Interaction, taking statemented pupils from 2-19 years. It is a generic special school, taking pupils with a wide range of needs. The school has three specific autism resources in key stage one, two and three/four with a higher staff to pupil ratio. Other pupils with autism are able to access their education in classes with a wide range of needs offering opportunities to develop social skills and empathy. All pupils have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) three times a year to set targets. The school operates a total communication environment using Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Makaton, communication aids and symbols to help pupils to communicate. As a school we demonstrate good practice in autism. We use elements of Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH) to create a structured day for our pupils. We use a positive approach to behaviour management working closely with parents and staff to help support pupils at home and at school.
