Main information
Type of service: Counsellor
I have been working with children and adolescents with autistic spectrum conditions (ASCs) for over 10 years, and in various roles. I now work with adults and adolescents as a Counselling Psychologist. This means I am trained to try to listen and understand what someone is experiencing, and to work with them to explore any difficulties they might be having in their lives. These will generally be when someone wants emotional support (someone to listen, or to help with processing how they are feeling and why they are feeling a certain way); or when someone wants social or relationship support (someone to listen, or to help with exploring how they can have the social experiences they would like). There are also many other areas that someone might want a Counselling Psychologist to help them with, for example if they are experiencing depression or anxiety that is affecting their lives. I am trained to work using both cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and to use relational therapy (where people can learn more about themselves by exploring what they think and feel about each other in the counselling room). Both of these approaches would be adapted in ways that make them more appropriate for someone with an ASC. For example, more use of writing things down, perhaps more use of drawings - but everyone is an individual and it would depend on what each person found helpful. I have received autism spectrum disorder (ASD) training and I have had experience of working with people who have ASD.
