Guidance across the nations
In all four nations all pupils are now back at school, including those considered vulnerable who were previously shielding.
Guidance on use of face coverings in schools
Students at secondary schools and colleges will be required to wear face coverings in some situations:
- in the classroom unless social distancing of two metres can be maintained
- in the corridors outside of lessons
- in communal areas where social distancing might be difficult
- when using dedicated school transport.
These rules apply to all students and teachers, however the guidance states that the same exemptions apply in schools as in other public places like shops and on transport.
This is important for autistic children who might struggle to wear a mask.
The rules around face coverings no longer apply in schools in England.
Home schooling
If your child is remaining at home, for example because they are shielding or they are self-isolating, you can read our top tips and resources for autistic students, teachers, and parents here.
What we’re doing
We are telling the Government about your experiences of the coronavirus outbreak so it knows what life is like for autistic people and their families. If you want to share your experiences, and any worries or concerns you have, with us by emailing stories@nas.org.uk.
