The NHS COVID-19 app
What is the app?
This app was launched by the Government in September 2020. It has been designed to help the NHS understand if and how quickly the virus is spreading in a particular area.
It does not track you or your location, instead it uses your postcode district to help the Government see where the virus is spreading.
The app is for people over 16 years old.
How does it work?
The app uses six key features to help both you and the community reduce the risk of contracting coronavirus.
Trace: The app detects and logs other nearby app users using random unique IDs. If someone close by tests positive for coronavirus you will receive an exposure alert with advice on what to do.
Alert: Using the first part of your postcode to alert you if the area you live in has become a high risk area for coronavirus. (This was previously true of the tiers system but now the UK is under varying coronavirus restrictions according to their nation).
Check in: When you visit a new place, you can “check in” when you arrive by scanning the venue’s QR code. It does not record personal information and will alert you if a place you have recently visited has come into contact with the virus. Under new regulations in England, you are required to leave your details at certain businesses like restaurants. You can do this using the app.
Symptoms: If you feel unwell you can use the app to check if your symptoms could be related to coronavirus. The app will give you a list of potential symptoms, you can choose the ones that apply to you and it will then tell you if you could have the virus.
Test: If you have coronavirus symptoms, the app will direct you to a website where you can book a test.
Isolate: The app will advise you to self-isolate if you have been in close contact with someone who has the virus or if you test positive. It then provides a countdown timer so you can keep track of how long you need to isolate for and it will alert you when you no longer need to.
What happens if I have a positive test result?
If you test positive for coronavirus the app will tell you to self-isolate and help you keep track of your isolation period. It will provide links to NHS advice on coronavirus and what to do if you feel unwell.
What does my positive test result mean for other members of the public?
If you test positive for coronavirus you can choose for other app users to be alerted. A random unique ID will then be used to anonymously alert other app users who you have been in close contact with on the days before you developed symptoms. No personal details will be shared and your identity is always protected.
Is the app accessible?
This app has been built for Apple iOS and Android devices meaning you can use built-in settings on your phone to make it more accessible. There is more information about how to do this on the NHS website.
Do I have to download the app?
Governments are encouraging people to download the app and use it to help stop coronavirus spreading. However, you don’t have to download it if you don’t want to. If you don’t have the app, you will need to check in at venues like restaurants, libraries or museums by leaving your details manually (e.g. writing in a book). These premises are legally required to take this information and will refuse entry to people who don’t give their details.
What if I can’t use the app?
There are ways to leave your details at venues without using the app (above). If you are in a group, one person can check in for the whole group if needed. So, if you are not able to leave your details, if you are going somewhere with another person, that person can check in for you.
