Abernethy, Jill
Main information
Type of service: Counsellor
I am a British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapy (BACP) registered Person Centred Counsellor with qualifications in both psychology and counselling. I operate within the ethical rules of the BACP and in common with all ethical practitioners, I am committed to continual professional development (CPD). For the past 2 years I have worked on a voluntary basis with Macmillan and within the National Health Service (NHS) specialising in bereavement, grief and living with life limiting illness. I also have a detailed understanding of the challenges people face with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), both with those on the spectrum and those who may be in a caring role and how it impacts on the wider family / friends. Prior to this I worked within Human Resources (HR) as a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) HR professional / Trainer. I decided to become a Person Centred Therapist as a result of my own life experiences and a belief that we are the experts of ourselves to find the answers to the issues that we may be struggling with. My approach to therapy is based firmly on this, that we are all have the ability to change and grow, and that we all have the right to decide our own destiny, and importantly, those decisions can be changed. In the counselling room I offer confidentiality, honesty, security, space and respect, to ensure that a positive, supporting alliance is established between us. I've worked with people experiencing a range of issues, including (but not limited to): Grief and Bereavement; Living with a life limiting illness (individuals, carers and support workers); Physical Disability; Cancer; Depression; Anxiety; Sadness; Low self-esteem; Family Problems; Autistic Spectrum / Aspergers & Living with Autism; Low self-confidence; Self-Development; and Suicidal Thoughts. Her Counselling approach is person centred.
