Ashmount caters for pupils with severe learning difficulties, a significant number of pupils have autism. Pupils are educated in mixed groups within each key stage. The school provides a modified national curriculum, specialised teaching, additional support services, technical resources and a therapeutic environment. Inclusion within school, in mainstream schools and colleges has a high priority. Ashmount provides a total communication environment. Speech, Makaton signing, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and symbol systems are used throughout the school. The curriculum encompasses early learning, cognitive skills and sensory perception. Work progresses through literacy and numeracy skills and the breadth of national curriculum subject areas suitably modified. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. We are now an Area Special School catering for all classifications of special educational needs (SEN)..
