Assessment of autism spectrum disorders in adults
Main information
Type of service: Assessment, Diagnostic services
The diagnostic assessment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) utilises a multi-disciplinary team (MDT)-led approach, incorporating gold standard assessment methods (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) and Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), and a focus on developmental history, current presentation, impairment, and consideration of differential diagnoses and co-morbidity. A comprehensive assessment report is provided, including an explanation for the diagnostic conclusion reached, (where possible) reference to ASD sub-type according to diagnostic criteria, and recommendations for future assessment or interventions. With the individual's consent, it is possible to copy the assessment report to others involved in their care eg General Practitioner (GP) or secondary care services, in order to ensure continuity of care and help, facilitate access to services.
Assessment procedure: The diagnostic assessment comprises the following: 1) an Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS); 2) an Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) - when possible; 3) a clinical interview with a consultant psychiatrist; 4) completion of clinical questionnaires; 5) use of ICD-10 diagnostic criteria; 6) further assessment if clinically indicated to reach a diagnostic conclusion eg neuropsychometric testing with a clinical psychologist, or assessment of other disorders eg ADHD.
