Autism Outreach Service

Main information

Type of service: Outreach - education

The Autism Outreach Service (AOS) is part of Leicestershire Local Authority’s (LA's) Specialist Teaching Services. The Team offers support to children and young people with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) aged 3-19 years, their schools and families. The work undertaken includes assessment of individuals needs, assistance in planning appropriate interventions and advice in implementation of teacher and behaviour programmes. The AOS is involved in preparation and delivery of training to colleagues, professionals and parents. The AOS has written and compiled a range of resources. The AOS has three teams of teachers and practitioners; Early Years, Schools and Intensive Support. Three full time teachers are deployed to specialist autism classes attached to a mainstream primary school. The AOS seeks to maintain close relations with statutory and voluntary agencies involved in the education of children with ASDs in order that the most appropriate and effective provision can be made. The Autism Outreach Team do not accept volunteers to work with service users but can sometimes suggest placements.
