The Communication and Learning Department (CLD) is a London Borough of Redbridge provision. Priority is given to those pupils who live in this borough. Students offered places are those who will benefit from supported access to social and academic opportunities in the main school. Within the department students are in small class bases with a class teacher and Learning Support Assistants (LSA). Here we aim to deliver a curriculum that is appropriate and relevant to individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Intervention is planned and delivered by a multi-agency team who seek to ensure that all teaching and learning opportunities suit the individual's learning style. CLD aim for the students to generalise and link all this across to their mainstream opportunities. We have a team of trained LSAs who support individual students in mainstream lessons in both Key Stages 3 (KS3) and 4. The LSAs liaise with the mainstream staff and feedback to department teachers in relation to Individual Education Plan (IEP) targets and progress both academic and social. They also liaise with parents about homework and coursework and advise teachers on differentiation. The students are in class bases within the unit with other pupils with ASD. However all students access some mainstream lessons alongside mainstream peers with support as required. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils.
