Broadmeadow is a special school for children aged from 2 to 7 years, with severe and complex learning difficulties, including those with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We have 6 classes. Two classes are specifically for children with an ASD aged 2-5 years and 5-7 years. Two classes are for children who are working at an early stage of development and the remaining two classes are for children with general difficulties. We use a range of teaching methods and augmentative communication systems such as Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren (TEACCH), multi sensory, intensive interaction, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), makaton and objects or symbols of reference. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. The school runs a holiday respite service playscheme for 12 days during July and August for their own pupils only. We also provide after school care from 3.00pm until 5.30pm offering a range of exciting activities including swimming. Other facilities provided by the school are home learning resources, sensory room, sensory gym, and sensory garden. Other disabilities catered for by the school include Williams syndrome, Down syndrome and Angelmans.
