Brookfields School is a school for pupils with severe and complex learning difficulties including autism spectrum condition (ASC) aged 3-11 years. The school had a successful OFSTED in 2018 in which it was designated outstanding in all categories. The school was re-accredited by The National Autistic Society (NAS) in 2015 as a day school with areas of good practice cited as the School Environment, Sensory Practice, Family and Support Links, Consistent Understanding of Autism and within the area of Teaching and Learning the activity organisation and teaching methods in use. All staff receive Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH) and Team-Teach training. A trained music therapist works on a weekly basis with identified pupils and all pupils work regularly with a specialist music teacher. Brookfields commissions Speech and Language Therapy support, an Art Therapist and a Specialist Occupational Therapist to provide sensory integration therapy. The school offers a range of after school clubs including Rebound Therapy, Drama, Cookery and swimming in the school pool. The school has a registered NAS Early Bird Team and staff trained in NAS Healthy Minds parent/carer course. We also offer a range of family learning opportunities and support with a range of areas to parents and carers by employing a Family Support Worker. The school has 82 pupils on roll and they are taught in mixed classes of autistic and non-autistic pupils. The school subscribes to Institute for Applied Behaviour Analysis (IABA) behaviour principles and policy and practice is based on this. Where appropriate pupils may access mainstream provision through social inclusion programmes. The school operates an outreach service for ASC providing support and training to mainstream settings across Halton.
