Claytons Primary School
Main information
Type of service: Day schools, Schools
The name of the department for children with special needs is the Social Communication Disorders (SCD) Department. Claytons is the only primary school in the Thameside village of Bourne End and occupies an extensive site at Well End. The buildings have recently been adapted and improved to provide every facility for the children. Surrounding the buildings are extensive grounds and playing areas for the children. Throughout their time with us we aim to provide our pupils with an all round education of the highest standard. At the same time we recognise the importance of regarding each pupil as an individual, furnishing them with appropriate stimuli to encourage self-motivation and independent learning. Each class has its own classroom, and each child has his or her own desk space. We have whiteboards and classroom computers in each teaching area and most members of teaching staff are equipped with their own laptop computers, the 30 networked computers in the computer suite are used by all children. We have many areas in the school that are dedicated for specific activities including a special needs section. In the early years emphasis is placed on the core skills with things like individual reading plans tailored to each child. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. The pupils are taught the majority of the time in mainstream and also have the opportunity to access a small specialist class where lessons are taught alongside OT and SALT classes.
