Derwen College
Main information
Type of service: Further & Higher Education, Residential services
Derwen College is a specialist residential college committed to promoting, through inclusive learning, the vocational, educational, personal and social development of young people with a wide range of learning difficulties and disabilities. Students are encouraged to reach their maximum potential within a vocational framework. The aim is to provide further education in the broadest sense and there is an extended curriculum designed to support students in their transition towards independence. Objectives and preferred learning styles are established and a differentiated individual programme developed. An integrated programme of education support is provided for all students and emphasis is placed on key skills. The College provides each student with an appropriate level of care support. This allows students to determine, after consultation with their personal tutor and counsellor, an individual set of life skills objectives to develop independence. Student participation is encouraged in a wide range of evening clubs, leisure trips and sporting activities. Emphasis is placed on guiding and encouraging students to develop their own leisure pattern in the hope that this will be maintained after leaving College.
