Derwen Enterprises
Main information
Type of service: Further & Higher Education, Residential services
Derwen Enterprises are available to young people with learning difficulties and disabilities who have completed a course of further education. A period of extended training is offered to the post-19 age group in order to help them achieve independence and possibly secure open employment. All trainees initially live in flats or bedsitters on campus where they are provided with appropriate levels of care and daily living support, whilst developing their level of personal independence. The next stage is a move into independent flats away from the College where trainees can live more independently. The Craft Workshop, the Garden Centre, the Ceramics Department arm Shop, the Gallery, restaurant and the coffee shop form Derwen Enterprises, and all trainees work flexi-hours under the supervision of the tutors. Contact with the public in whichever department the trainees are working is strongly encouraged. The Enterprises are open daily for most of the year. All trainees work a 35 hour week with six weeks holiday per year. The service provides residential - 52 or 37 weeks per year.
