The name of the unit for children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is The Language and Communication Base for Young People with ASD. This is a mainstream comprehensive school for pupils aged 11-18 years. The Language and Communication Base has placements for up to 12 pupils living in the geographical area of Torfaen, Monmouth, Newport and Blaenau Gwent. Pupils access 70 per cent plus of lessons in mainstream. They follow a specialised curriculum in base which includes social skills, social use of language, and introducing pupils to ASD and life skills. They also have support for anger management and behaviour. Pupils must have a diagnosis of ASD. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils so long as they have police checks. The school uses the Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework. The school is hoping to develop outreach in the future.
