Fiveways is school for children with severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It provides a specialist education centred on the individual needs of its children. It is purpose- built and situated in its own grounds. There are approximately 68 pupils ranging in age from 4 to 19 years. There are eight classroom areas, a Social Education Centre (self contained house) for post-16 education and several specialist areas. The teacher/pupil ratio varies from 1:1 to 1:9. A multi disciplinary focus is highly valued and facilitated by regular physiotherapy, speech therapy and paediatric input. Pupils have individual learning programmes and the curriculum centres around the highly individualised needs of the child. Pupils follow the curriculum defined by the school's curriculum framework statement. Fiveways provides links for children attending the school with local mainstream schools. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils with police clearance. Local training courses and support are offered as an outreach service. In addition the school has recently achieved specialist school status in the area of communication and interaction.
