Main information

Type of service: Further & Higher Education

Freeman College is one of three independent specialist further education colleges operated by Ruskin Mill Trust. Founded September 2005, the college provides practical skills and therapeutic education for young people aged 16 to 25 with complex learning and behavioural difficulties, many of who have autism spectrum conditions. The college provides a individualised learning programme for each student, which aims to help young people develop practical, social and living skills through an experiential learning-based curriculum. This is integrated within daytime and residential provision with a 38- to 52-week residential programme that includes a diet rich in organic foods and provides a unique model of care that promotes healthy development. Many courses at the college are accredited, enabling students to make tangible and recognised achievements and to progress to recognised qualifications whilst at college and through external providers. Freeman College facilitates a wide range of work experience and vocational opportunities within its own and other local businesses in catering, horticulture, retail, metalwork and crafts. This increases self-esteem and helps develop functional skills such as team-building, work competence, employability and independent living. The college promotes healthy lifestyles and sports activities and provides medical and therapeutic support, according to each student's needs. Throughout the year, the college celebrates festivals, cultural opportunities and a full arts programme. The student council engages in all aspects of college life and each student will be involved in their individual transition planning.
