Gibside is a primary school for pupils with a range of special needs (moderate learning disabilities (MLD), severe learning disabilities (SLD), profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) and autism spectrum condition (ASC)). Approximately half our pupils have an ASC diagnosis. Pupils are placed in ASC specific bases or in our main classes alongside mixed ability peer group depending on their needs. All ASC specific bases are 'double rooms' with 6 pupils to 1 teacher and two Teaching Assistants. Gibside has recently been judged as "Outstanding" in all areas of the new Ofsted framework. The school accepts volunteers to work with pupils in mainstream classes who are police cleared, on work experience or to support activities requiring high staff: pupil ratio eg rebound therapy. All 5 autism bases follow Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) principles.
