Music therapy uses singing, improvisation, role-play activities and musical story telling to help engage patients in therapeutic activity. Sessions can often assist and encourage clients to form relationships with others. Music therapy does not require clients to have any previous musical ability or skills. Music therapists can work individually with clients and also within group setting of up to 6 people, depending on the individual reasons for referral. The benefits of music therapy include the following: social interaction; engagement and focus within activities; development of creative play; management of emotions and development of a non-verbal expression of emotions; development of confidence and self-esteem; increased listening and ability to organise responses. Referrals can be made on behalf of the client and can come from parents, key workers, doctors, social workers and other professions. Self-referrals are also accepted. Accepts volunteers.
