Green Lane School caters for 126 pupils with complex learning difficulties (including pupils with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD)) in the age range 4-16. We have established three distinct classes for ASD pupils in school - Foundation/Key Stage 1 (KS1); KS2; and, from September 2008, KS3. We intend to create a KS4 class when funding permits, although at this moment in time there are no pupils who require this level of support. Currently these classes support some 15 pupils with ASD. The other 13 pupils are taught within the main part of the school. Our philosophy in creating the structure we have is twofold. Firstly, that the very distinctive needs of our more severely affected ASD pupils are met in a 'specialist' environment. Secondly, that wherever and whenever appropriate, these pupils should integrate with their peer groups. This approach has proved to be very successful with at least 8 pupils who started off within the discreet provision now being taught within the main classes of the school. Our provision was judged as being 'outstanding' for all pupils in the Ofsted of October 2009. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. Another intervention, approach and programme offered by the school is Social Communication, Emotional Regulation and Transactional Support (SCERTS). Since September 2009 we have employed our own occupational therapist for 1 day a week. 2 Teaching Assistants (TAs) have been trained to deliver speech and language programmes.
