The name of the unit for children with autism is the Designated Special Provision (DSP) Autism. The unit caters for 30 children and is placed on a mainstream site. There are 5 self-contained classrooms with integration opportunities both on and off site. The curriculum, whilst addressing National Curriculum areas, is as real life and as practical as possible with community access for all pupils. The provision has its own self-contained playground and outside play equipment, a large ball pool and soft play room. There is a life skills curriculum for developing independence skills. The school also follows the Foundation Curriculum. All the staff are trained in Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped CHildren (TEACCH) principles. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils.
