Hampton Dene is a small primary school located within Hereford City. The school houses a 'Language and Communication Centre'; a resource for 29 children with statements of special educational needs (SEN) with severe language and communication difficulties, and comprising of 3 classes: a Key Stage 1 (KS1) class and a KS2 class for children with speech, language and communication difficulties, and a class for 9 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (covering KS1 and KS2). There is some flexibility between the autism base and other class groups in the centre (and the main school) in placing children for sessions during the school day depending on their needs, as identified by the professionals within the centre. Volunteers may be accepted to work with pupils - chosen by school/vetted by Local Education Authority (LEA). The centre uses the Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH) framework. We are aimed at ASD and children with specific language impairment (SLI). We have no specific ratio, this is determined by the needs of the children.
