Headlands School is a mainstream school with a Specialist Provision unit for six children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Children accessing the provision can stay for a maximum of six terms before transferring back to their local school. Children accessing the provision are encouraged to integrate with their peers but also follow specific programmes such as Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH). They are encouraged to develop independence skills, life skills and there is a strong emphasis on speech and language development. The school also offers an Outreach service to pupils in mainstream schools in North Kirklees. This Outreach service includes access to a Family special educational needs (SEN) Worker, support with writing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), behaviour management and ASD specific approaches. The Outreach team work closely with the Speech and Language Therapy service.
