The name of the unit for children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the Centre for Autism. Heronsbridge is a day/residential school for children who have additional learning needs. There are 224 pupils in the school, of whom 70 are on the ASD continuum. They are educated in 8 classes designated for pupils with autism and some are in mixed groups within the main body of the school. There are only 6 residential places and all of these are for pupils who have autism. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. Males only are in the residential part of the school at present. The school also offers Signalong, uses picture exchange communication system (PECS) and Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped CHildren (TEACCH) approach to learning. The school offers EarlyBird & EarlyBird Plus and has on site trainers. All staff are trained to use proactive approach to behaviour support (PRO-ACT-SCIPr-UK®) and has in house trainers.
