Main information

Type of service: Assessment, Day schools, Nursery and pre-schools, Schools

International Community School (ICS) offers a comprehensive program for those children with mild and moderate autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Operating under the philosophy of inclusion, we assess the needs of each child to develop a profile of learning strengths and weaknesses from which an Individualised Education Plan (IEP) is developed. IEPs are used as the guiding framework remediate learning difficulties, but also to facilitate the child's integration into all classroom activities. Because of the wide range of learning differences that exists within ICS, the approach to instruction is flexible and adapted to meet individual needs within the overall curriculum framework. We utilise a multi-disciplinary team approach. An array of specialised services are offered and may include literacy and numeracy support, speech and language therapy, counselling, occupational therapy and in-clear learning support assistance. Learning is extended beyond the classroom via excursions within the City of London, the UK and internationally to assist in the generalisation and extension of skills acquired in the program. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. The school uses the SPELL framework. We have a primary years special education programme for students with more severe needs who cannot access the mainstream curriculum. We also have a secondary life skills programme for our students who need a more functional academic approach.
