Kirkriggs Primary School is a school for pupils with moderate learning difficulties (MLD). Within the school there are pupils with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) - those who can are included in a large group in the main sector of our MLD classes, but we also cater for children in special classes who require a more specific autism environment. Applications to the school are through the educational authority. Kirkriggs is an inclusive school for children with additional learning needs and for some children with an additional ASD. All pupils are included in the main classes of our school. Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH) approaches and Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) are used as appropriately. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. We can ask for child and mental health services as well as speech and language, physiotherapy and occupational therapy assessment when appropriate.
