The name of the unit for pupils with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the North Powys ASD Centre. To provide an ASD resource for pupils at secondary school age for all of North Powys. Pupils are taught in mainstream classes, with support when necessary. Their timetables can be adapted when the need arises and we arrange for them to do most of their homework during the school day. We provide a safe environment for pupils with Asperger syndrome or high functioning autism. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. Six formers help during break and lunch time especially with the older pupils. The school uses the Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework. Every pupil is treated as an individual. Their school day is structured around their needs. Social skills and social use of language programme (SULP) lessons are provided. Pupils are referred by the Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCO) in their primary school.
