The name of the resource base for a maximum of 8 children with the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the Communication and Interaction Autism Resource Base (CAIRB). The children are referred by Preliminary Standard Assessment Tests (PSATs) and Educational Psychologists (EPs) and reports forwarded to a Local Education Authority (LEA) panel. Admissions are discussed and statements issued. The aim of this provision is to support children with complex needs in a mainstream setting leading to full time inclusion. The children begin in the base on admission, registered in mainstream and then will begin an inclusion programme into their classes as and when they are able. The base has a full time specialist teacher and a teaching assistant. The teacher offers outreach support to ASD children throughout the school. The school uses the Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework.
