Maple Ridge is a primary special school for children aged 4-11 years with moderate learning difficulties (MLD). There are 77 pupils on the roll organised in 7 classes with a teacher and 2 or 3 support staff in each class. About 60% of the population have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and these children are supported according to their needs within mixed classes. The school uses Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren (TEACCH) principles and augmented forms of communication including Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). We also have a home/school worker who specialises in ASD. We provide outreach to the local mainstream schools and pre-school provisions and have just started to provide TOPS service and EarlyBird courses. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils.
