Mayfield School, Chorley is a local authority, all age, special school catering for 70 pupils aged between 2 and 19 years. Pupils have a wide range of severe and complex learning difficulties including 15 pupils with a diagnosis of autism. These pupils are taught in mixed groups with some pupils receiving individual full-time support. The school uses an eclectic range of teaching styles including the use of Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), symbol systems and aspects of the Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH) approach. We have staff who give training and support to mainstream colleagues working with pupils with autism and are able to provide help and advice for parents.
