The name of the unit for children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the Arches. Mersey Drive School is a primary school catering for the local Whitefield area. The school also houses 2 specialist classes for pupils with an ASD. Arches is a class of Foundation Stage/Key Stage 1 (FS/KS1) children with an ASD and mainstream ability. The unit works to place these children back into inclusive education in their local community school. Bridges is a class of mainly KS2 children with an ASD and mainstream ability who require additional specialist support in order to access the curriculum. These pupils work within the mainstream school where appropriate. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils.
