The service provides additional support at pre-school stages and in primary and secondary schools across Midlothian for children and young people with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The service, led by a Principal Teacher, is provided by a small team of teachers and learning assistants. The service offers advice and support to the Headteacher or designated School Manager of the child's school who has overall responsibility for each child's support. Offers the following: home visits to pre-school children; assessment; advice on curriculum planning and evaluation to support achievement; support and advice for school staff on the various aspects of ASD; supporting in planning individual education plans (IEPs); practical classroom advice including in-class support for set blocks of time; support and advice for parents/carers; preparation and support for transition; and staff development, advice and training. Referral to the service is by the child or young person's Headteacher. The service accepts volunteers as part of the school buddy system. Many of their young people have co-morbid difficulties with their ASD. They accept service users from young people in mainstream educaiton in Midlothian as well as pre-school age children.
