Millfields Community School
Main information
Type of service: Day schools, Outreach - education, Schools
The name of the base for 10 primary aged children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in a mainstream primary school is Millfields Autism Resourced Provision (ARP). Each child is on roll in a mainstream class and spends time there according to their abilities and needs. The children join their classes for lessons and activities with work differentiated for them and for class trips and other projects. In the base children work individually and in small groups. Peers may join them for group work, play, and swimming. We have 10 staff, including manager, specialist teacher, Nursery Officer and 7 Learning Support Assistants, plus 2 days SLT a week. We aim to create a calm structured environment. We recognise that autism is a lifelong condition and accept each child as an individual with talents and strengths. We use a variety of strategies and approaches. We are introducing the SCERTS framework. The ARP has a broad curriculum including individual work on IEP targets, gross and fine motor skills, art, science, sensory play, cooking, PE, music, gardening, ICT. We have an enrichment curriculum which currently includes swimming, horse riding in the summer term, gardening, cooking and a yearly residential trip. We work closely with families, have regular communication, attend appointments with parents and offer a parents group. The school offers a playscheme in school holidays for our children and other primary aged children with ASD in the borough. Volunteers may be accepted.
