Mitford Unit is a specialist adult inpatient unit located on the Northgate Hospital site and provides a highly specialist inpatient service for adults with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Northumberland, Tyne and Wear's (NTW's) established inpatient service transferred into the purpose built 15 bedded unit in November 2016. The autism inpatient service is for adults who are on the autism spectrum, who have extremely complex needs and display challenging behaviours to the extent that their needs cannot be met by local assessment and treatment services. The service also provides diversion for individuals who have been inappropriately placed within secure services..
