Musselburgh Burgh Primary School is a modern building on three floors with the nursery and Primary 1 classes situated in a ground floor wing. The school has a gym hall and separate assembly hall and dining hall. There are 12 classes in the mainstream school, a 40-place nursery and 1 class for Communication Provision (CP). All of our remaining CP pupils needs are severe and complex. Each child has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) devised, implemented, monitored and reviewed by a specialist speech and language therapist and teaching staff. Each child is assessed on his/her own abilities to cope with integration within the mainstream classes. The majority of children are educated in their small group within the CP and join in the mainstream for breaks, assembly and Golden Time. Some join the mainstream for longer parts of their day, usually in an area that is a strength such as art, music and gym. The mainstream children come in small groups to work in the CP providing good models and fostering relationships. There is a class for children whose needs are severe and complex. These children work to integrate with children in other Communication classes. Volunteers to work with the pupils may be accepted, including pupils from secondary school on work experience, and students from local Further Education (FE) colleges on placement. The CP is due to close by 2016.
