Main information
Type of service: Day schools, Schools
NAS Thames Valley School is a free school sponsored by The National Autistic Society (NAS). It opened its doors to children with autism in Berkshire and neighbouring counties in September 2013. NAS Thames Valley School caters for 50 children and young people with autism (including Asperger syndrome) aged 5 to 16. The school is a collaboration between the NAS and local authorities, voluntary groups, schools and parents. The school benefits from the NAS's years' experience in the autism education sector and an evidenced commitment to continually improving outcomes for children and young people with autism. Free schools represent a new model of education. At NAS Thames Valley School, each child has an inclusion plan that develops their ability to thrive in a range of environments. Inclusion opportunities is available for each child and may involve joining certain classes at mainstream school, or going to after-school clubs and other social occasions. Information Technology (IT) is used to offer a range of learning opportunities and participation in community events is encouraged. For some children, the first step toward inclusion is learning to tolerate being in a classroom with one or more peers. NAS Thames Valley School has a 'revolving door' policy for some pupils and equip them with the skills they need to be able to return to mainstream education.
