NBA Autism Services (NBAAS)

Type of service: Assessment, Diagnostic services

NBA Autism Services specialise in complex cases of suspected Autism or Asperger's syndrome in children and adults where there may be other complicating factors e.g. a history of attachment disruption, forensic issues or co-morbid mental health problems. We can also provide intensive support or advice with social care, education, mental health and/or employment needs. .

The Assessment Process always seeks to include: .

  • a review of previous assessments and/or evidence
  • a detailed developmental history
  • a one to one clinical interview with the client, observations of the client and appropriate psychometric tests/questionnaires to assess cognitive ability, literacy, adaptive /occupational functioning, personality & mental health and the triad of impairments characteristic of autism.

Each assessment will be discussed with another member of the NBA Autism team to ensure that the conclusions drawn are sound and robust. Our Consultants at The NBA Autism Team includes educational, clinical, forensic and counselling Psychologists who are all: .

  • registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as Practitioner Psychologists, Chartered with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and DBS checked
  • trained and experienced in the assessment of ASD
  • clinically experienced in differentiating ASD from other related or co-morbid conditions
  • qualified registered users of psychometric tests and clinical procedures for assessing family relations and attachment issues.

We also have a Speech & Language Therapist who specialises in working with children and young people with autism spectrum conditions. .

Assessment procedure: The Assessment Process always seeks to include: a review of previous assessments and/or evidence; a detailed developmental history (using the ADI-R or 3di); a one to one clinical interview with the client, observations, and appropriate psychometric tests/questionnaires e.g. SCQ, SRES-2, DSMD and administration of the relevant ADOS-2 Module; and, reliable informants to gather standardised information about the adult/child in different settings.

Follow up service: We can provide advice and guidance to individuals, families, commissioners and/or providers about access to appropriate educational, social care, occupational and/or mental health services for individuals with Autism.

Multi-disciplinary assessment: Our team includes psychologists with clinical, educational and forensic expertise; speech and language and occupational therapists. We are trained and experienced in the assessment of ASD using 'gold standard tools' including ADOS2, ADI-R, 3di, SCQ and SRS-2. We can assess related or co-morbid conditions such as Learning Disability, OCD, Anxiety Disorders, Major Depression, Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder, ADHD using psychometric tests and clinical procedures.
