The unit is autism specific, it is attached to a mainstream school and comprises of 3 classes with 8 children in each class. All the children have severe autism with additional learning difficulties. Each class has 1 teacher, 1 National Nursery Examination Board (NNEB) and 1 Learning Support Assistant (LSA). Children are taught through 1:1 sessions, small group work and by inclusion visits to mainstream classes. Some of the mainstream pupils work in the unit as "Peer Tutors" and there are opportunities for unit children to visit mainstream for academic lessons and social interaction sessions. The unit uses an holistic approach using Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH), Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Intensive Interaction as well as a range of sensory processing therapies.
