The name of the unit for children with special needs is the Language and Communication Centre (LCC). We have a Centre with placements for 25 children with statement of educational needs for communication, with 4 diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The children receive literacy and numeracy within the Centre, all other subjects are taken in an age appropriate mainstream class with adult support from Centre staff. Volunteers may be accepted to work with the pupils. The school uses the Structure, Positive (approaches and expectations), Empathy, Low arousal, Links (SPELL) framework. In mainstream we have 2 pupils diagnosed with an ASD and 3 pupils diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. In the LCC we have 2 teachers, 2 speech therapists and 2 teaching assistants.
